Why Pakistan professor Junaid Hafeez has been behind bars for 13 years

Pakistan has never really hanged anyone for blasphemy. In author Mohammad Hanif's words, the state simply fits a noose around a man's neck each morning and loosens it each night — a mercy just enough to let the country’s conscience sleep. Pakistani professor Junaid Hafeez has been wearing that noose for 13 years. In December, 2019, after 6 years of adjournments and judge transfers, a trial court sentenced him to death. Lahore High Court heard his case Tuesday and relisted it for next month.
