Description
The Supreme Court has sought clarity from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on 13 aspects of its proposed front-of-pack warning labels for packaged foods high in sugar, salt and fat.
The court has questioned the two-phase rollout, nutrient thresholds, label size and design, the use of added versus total nutrients, mandatory implementation and the possibility of manufacturers replacing sugar, salt or fat with other additives.
In this interview, ThePrint’s Sneha Richhariya speaks to Rajiv Shankar Dwivedi, lawyer for the petitioners, about the Supreme Court’s latest order, what the petitioners are seeking and what the proposed warning labels should ultimately achieve for consumers.
