The Rise Of Gooning: Inside The World Of Gooner Subculture

VICE explores the rise of the Gooning subculture: Over the last 18 months, the internet has hurled a new type of subculture into the world, one based around onanism, self-pleasure—whatever you want to call it—and the people who are doing it for hours and hours on end in pursuit of a near-mythical zen-like state of bliss. These are the gooners, and they have been getting louder and prouder as media attention in their porn-obsessed pursuits has boomed. But is gooning really a bona fide subculture, with its own slang, lore, and social codes? Or is it just an internet joke that got out of hand? Making her VICE debut, host Noelle Perdue heads to AVN—the world’s largest porn expo—for the first time since gooning exploded into the mainstream, to meet gooners, to listen to their fantasies and anxieties, and to try to get to the bottom of what gooning really is.
