Viral Palm Oil Dye Test Explained

Description
When I posted last week that the viral palm oil water test doesn’t tell you much of anything, I was attacked for being all sorts. Unfortunately, virality does not mean evidence based.
Adulterated palm oil is a REAL issue.
🇨🇦 CFIA found Sudan IV in 1/72 samples in 2019–20 and 1/32 in 2020–21.
🇺🇸 An FDA-affiliated study found Sudan IV in 4 of 20 brands tested.
🇬🇭 A 2026 Ghana study found Sudan dyes in 33% of 18 samples tested.
What this water test has done is trivialize a real food safety issue. It can make you think “my palm oil is fine” when Sudan IV, one of the main dyes of concern, is fat-soluble and practically insoluble in water.
Clear water does not mean your oil is safe.
My position remains that we deserve protection through proper testing, monitoring and enforcement, not viral kitchen experiments designed to give a false sense of security.
