Mayo Clinic · · 2 views

Description

The 2nd of 4 in our Prostate Cancer Conversation series in partnership with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. In this discussion Dr. Ricky Ashby discusses Detection and Diagnosis of Prostate Cancer and a Prostate cancer survivor shares his experience. Prostate cancer often develops without noticeable symptoms, making early detection and informed screening decisions especially important. In this community conversation, Mayo Clinic experts and a prostate cancer survivor discuss how prostate cancer is detected, diagnosed and monitored. Learn how the PSA blood test is used, when screening may begin, what symptoms can occur, and how MRI, biopsy, Gleason scores, genetic testing and advanced imaging help guide care. You’ll also hear a personal survivor story about recognizing changes, seeking medical evaluation, comparing treatment options and finding support from family and community. Topics include: • PSA testing and prostate cancer screening • When to talk with your doctor about screening • Early- and late-stage prostate cancer symptoms • MRI, biopsy and Gleason scoring • Low-, intermediate- and high-risk prostate cancer • Active surveillance and treatment decisions • Genetic testing and advanced imaging • A survivor’s diagnosis and radiation treatment experience • Community research and clinical study opportunities This program is presented through a collaboration between Mayo Clinic and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, to help communities better understand prostate cancer risk, screening and survivorship. This video is for general educational purposes and does not replace medical advice. Talk with your healthcare professional about your individual risk factors and screening options.0:00 Welcome and Event Overview 1:14 Cancer Conversation Goals and Agenda 2:38 Pre-Event Knowledge Survey 5:04 Prostate Cancer Detection and Diagnosis 6:13 What Prostate Cancer Screening Means 7:48 Understanding the PSA Blood Test 9:33 When Prostate Cancer Screening Should Begin 10:54 Symptoms and Importance of Early Detection 12:39 Screening Benefits, Risks and Overtreatment 14:12 Symptoms of Advanced Prostate Cancer 15:23 MRI, Biopsy and Diagnostic Imaging 18:10 Gleason Scores and Cancer Staging 19:31 Low, Intermediate and High-Risk Disease 21:46 Advanced Imaging and Genetic Testing 26:44 A Survivor’s Prostate Cancer Journey 39:41 Audience Questions About Screening and Surgery 48:25 Community Research and Engagement Opportunities 53:48 Vitamin D Prostate Cancer Research Study 57:39 Closing Remarks and Resources From Mayo Clinic to your inbox (free): https://mayocl.in/3e71zfi Visit Mayo Clinic: https://mayocl.in/2COVmlm Connect with Mayo Clinic: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mayoclinic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mayoclinic X: https://x.com/MayoClinic Threads: https://www.threads.net/@mayoclinic
