What Blood Pressure Numbers Actually Mean
Dr Ben Ng ·
Description
You’ve checked your blood pressure… but you don’t really know what the numbers mean.
What do blood pressure numbers actually tell you?
The short answer is: they reflect the pressure inside your arteries — and higher numbers increase long-term risk, even if you feel fine.
Most people see two numbers and feel unsure.
Which one matters more?
Is this normal?
Should I be worried?
It’s not always clear.
And here’s the part people miss.
The top number reflects the pressure when your heart pumps.
The bottom number reflects the pressure when it relaxes.
Both matter.
Because both reflect how much strain your blood vessels are under.
And over time, that strain adds up.
This isn’t about a single reading.
It’s about patterns.
Because risk builds gradually — not suddenly.
As a rough guide, readings that are consistently above around 130 to 140 start to matter more.
But what matters most is the trend over time — and your overall risk.
So the number isn’t just a reading.
It’s a reflection of what your body is experiencing every day.
This may not apply to everyone.
So this is how I’d bend it.
Blood pressure numbers aren’t just values — they reflect the pressure your body is living with over time.
