The Culture That Kept a Falling Kingdom Alive | Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown

Description

From the streets of LA to the mountains of Laos, Anthony takes us on an unforgettable journey through food, history, and unexpected friendships. We start in Los Angeles with action icon Danny Trejo, the man who went from prison cells to Hollywood's most iconic tough-guy roles (Heat, From Dusk Till Dawn, Machete). Bourdain sits down with him ahead of the opening of his own restaurant to talk tacos, health-conscious Mexican street food, his surprising love of British rock, and how helping others turned his life around after San Quentin. From there, Tony travels to Laos, a country secretly devastated by the largest covert bombing campaign in history during the Vietnam War era. We meet chef James Syhabout, who returns to his family's homeland to reconnect with the food and people his family once fled, while Anthony listens to the stories of those who lived through, and still live with the consequences of, the "Secret War." Back in New York, Anthony heads to Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens for a day of long-shot bets, Jamaican beef patties, and blue-collar charm. He then visits a pigeon-racing club before making his way to Jamaica, Queens, where Anthony explores how immigrant communities preserve their culture, one dish at a time, alongside a Nigerian restaurant owner and a food writer. A story about survival, reinvention, and the meals that carry a person's whole history in them, experienced through Anthony’s eyes, conversations, and unforgettable encounters along the way.
