Join us as try eating traditional Japanese Breakfast in Osaka, Japan at a 24 hour restaurant we found near the apartment we were staying at in Osaka, Japan. Given our struggles with jet lag we had already been up for several hours when we ventured off to grab some breakfast in Osaka. It was so early the metro stations had not even opened and we had more of a hangover crowd rather than businessmen and women heading off to work. We noticed this little 24 hour restaurant nearby Nagahoribashi Station, next door to Yoshinoya. Sorry, we forget the name of this place and it isn't on Google maps but if you find the Yoshinoya just outside of this station you'll see the restaurant just to the right of it. In terms of the traditional Japanese breakfast we ended up eating a lot of standard items such as rice, fish, tofu, miso soup, ginger, Nattō, tea and other things. It felt like a very healthy way to start the day with decent amount of protein, functional carbs and nothing to sugary. In fact it was more of a salty and savoury breakfast which we enjoyed because we didn't have a sugar crash afterwards. Have you had breakfast in Japan before? What did you try? If you are Japanese or a foreigner based in Japan do you feel this is a typical Japanese breakfast or did we miss out on some dishes? What do you typically have for breakfast at home wherever you are watching this video from? Thanks to relentless jet lag, we were up before 3 am and out the door for another dawn adventure. At 4:52 am, with the streets quiet and only a few cyclists and taxi drivers in sight, we set off to find an authentic traditional Japanese breakfast (伝統的な日本式朝食). We’d spotted a 24-hour chain restaurant next to the metro on a previous sleepless morning and decided this was the perfect opportunity to finally check it out. 🍽️ Placing Our Order: Convenience & Speed With the metro set to open around 5 am, the restaurant’s location couldn’t be more convenient—ideal for commuters and early risers alike. Ordering was a breeze thanks to the ticket machine: we selected our meals, got our printed tickets, and handed them to the server. Within minutes, our trays were delivered, showcasing the incredible speed of Japanese service. 🥢 What’s in a Traditional Japanese Breakfast? We love researching our meals, so we knew a typical Japanese breakfast usually features: Steamed white rice Miso soup A protein, often grilled fish Assorted small side dishes Tofu or egg Nori (seasoned seaweed) Optional: Natto (fermented soybeans) Our meal hit most of these points: rice, miso soup, a generous piece of grilled mackerel with soy and ginger, tofu with ginger and chives, nori, and a raw egg. Some sets also included a slimy porridge and a packet of natto for extra protein and flavor. 🐟 Tasting Time: Mackerel, Miso, and Tofu We started with the mackerel, which was incredibly tender and flavorful thanks to the soy-ginger sauce. Eating fish with chopsticks instead of a fork and knife felt uniquely Japanese, and the meat practically melted in our mouths—just watch for the bones! The miso soup was a highlight: hot, rich, and filled with nori and chives. We loved how salty and savory it was, a major upgrade from watery miso broths we’ve had elsewhere. The tofu, smooth and slippery, came drenched in gingery sauce and paired perfectly with the chives for a zesty bite. 🥚 Raw Egg, Porridge & Adventurous Sides Next up were some of the more “adventurous” elements: Porridge: A seaweed-infused, slimy mix, likely meant to be sipped from the bowl. Raw Egg: Unsure what to do, we tried dipping rice in it—definitely an acquired taste! Most Japanese would mix the raw egg into rice for extra richness, but this was the one element we mostly left behind. Natto: We found a hidden cup of natto (fermented soybeans), which was sticky, slimy, and mild in flavor—great for adding protein and a classic Japanese breakfast touch. 🥄 Mix and Match: Sharing, Tasting & Discoveries We swapped dishes to sample everything. The tofu with ginger and chives was a real winner—smooth, zesty, and satisfying. Having fish as a main morning protein was a refreshing change from sugary breakfasts, and the combination of carbs, protein, and umami flavor felt energizing and balanced. 💰 Great Value: Price & Portions The total for both breakfasts was just 490 and 590 Yen—$9.80 USD for two full meals! That’s amazing value, especially for a spread that was both nutritious and thoughtfully prepared. If you’re traveling Japan on a budget, chain restaurants like this make it easy to enjoy an authentic Japanese breakfast at any hour. Traditional Japanese Breakfast in Osaka, Japan:
