🆘 UPDATE: SINCE MY TRIP TO AFGHANISTAN, THE TALIBAN HAVE BEEN TAKING OVER THE COUNTRY, KILLING INNOCENT PEOPLE AND TAKING AWAY HOPE FROM A NATION ALREADY DESTABILIZED BY 40 YEARS OF WAR. PLEASE DONATE TO STAND IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE PEOPLE OF AFGHANISTAN AND HELP THEM SURVIVE THIS ORDEAL:

Buzkashi is NOT a game for the faint-hearted. An ancient game played on horseback, it involves throwing the carcass of a goat (or calf) into a goalpost, as hordes of other horseback riders swarm around you, trying to tear it away from you.
Believe it or not, it's been my dream for a long time to see a buzkashi game in Afghanistan. It's one of the national sports here, and a longstanding tradition that draws thousands to stadiums across the country. And finally, on a trip to Mazar-e-Sharif, I got to experience buzkashi for myself... Heck, I even tried to learn how to "play it"... That didn't go so well 😜
