Drawing the Eye

Description

In my initial mapping of the eye I look to set up basic forms, the shape and asymmetrical angle of the lids, and the (canthal) tilt across the sphere of the eye. Once the two dimensional design is set up I move into developing the large forms of the eye. This involves building out the sphere of the eye, the sharper lids (tarsus plates), socket, and areas of structural fat that the eye is couched in. The prior stage allows for me to see these complicated forms as simple volumes: spheres and boxes. From this point forward the process of rendering is lighting these basic surfaces and their interaction. I keep it simple with light side, shadow side, cast shadow, etc. When I'm satisfied with the read of form and lighting I explore texture. In this study I'm trying to distinguish between the iris, eye lash, skin, and surface texture of the eye ball. This is achieved through varying types of abstract mark making in the areas of halftone. The full head construction process is in Head Drawing and Construction, 26 lessons on Proko. Link in bio
