Description
Visiting Calgary with kids? Join us as we explore five fun places with our toddler, from meeting baby farm animals and watching butterflies to playing with toy dinosaurs at the library. We’ve visited Calgary many times before, but this time, we planned an itinerary around activities we could enjoy as a family. Plus, we’re also sharing where we stayed and what we ate along the way!
First up was Granary Road, located just south of Calgary in Foothills County. This active learning park combines themed play areas with farm animal encounters. Aurelia was still a little young for some of the games and climbing structures, but seeing the animals up close was a hit, especially visiting the goat pen with her cousin!
Next, we headed to Calgary’s Central Library in the East Village. Beyond the beautiful architecture, there’s a children’s area with books, toys and spaces to play. Aurelia loved the toy dinosaurs, and we managed to squeeze in some speed-reading between play sessions. This is a fun indoor stop for families exploring downtown Calgary, especially if you get a bad weather day.
We also spent a beautiful late afternoon at Prince’s Island Park. Our early-autumn visit brought golden leaves and the softest light, with people biking, walking, rafting along the Bow River and simply enjoying the outdoors. With pathways, picnic spots and a playground, it’s an easy place to slow down and take a break from sightseeing with little ones.
Then it was off to the Wilder Institute’s Calgary Zoo! We focused on Wild Canada and Destination Africa before stepping into the butterfly space. The zoo has several areas to explore, so we took our time with a few sections rather than trying to fit everything into one visit.
Our final stop was Butterfield Acres, a children’s farm on Calgary’s northwest end. The baby goats and piglets were highlights for Aurelia, and we also joined a tractor-pulled wagon ride, although she napped through that part of the adventure!
We hope this video gives you some ideas for your own family trip to Calgary. Which of these five places would your kids enjoy most? Let us know in the comments!
