India’s Jantar Mantar loses protest site status
CNA · · 94 views
Description
Indian police detained thousands of demonstrators over the weekend, shut several metro stations and restricted access to parts of central New Delhi as sporadic protests broke out demanding the resignation of the country’s election chief. Authorities have since removed Jantar Mantar – a long-established venue for demonstrations – from the list of officially designated protest sites. The move comes just days after Delhi police denied the Cockroach Janta Party permission to hold a protest there. CNA’s Julie Yoo looks at a brief history of Jantar Mantar and why the site has become an important symbol of democratic expression in India’s capital.
