Sanjay Gupta on Lowering Your Alzheimer's Risk | Dr. Oz | S8 | Ep 59 | Full Episode
Most people check their cholesterol. Far fewer know their A1C, and Dr. Richard Isaacson thinks that number may matter just as much for your brain.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta opens with a Tulane University finding that people on metformin, a cheap diabetes drug, had a lower risk of dementia. High blood sugar damages the connections between brain cells over years, and 86 million Americans have prediabetes. One in four people with full diabetes don't know they have it.
Gupta also reports on a small study from Iran where Alzheimer's patients who drank probiotic milk did nearly 30 percent better on memory tests after 12 weeks. Dr. Ayesha Sherzai and Max Lugavere talk through the gut and brain connection, and Gupta shares a turmeric tea made with almond milk, cinnamon, ginger and honey.
The panel lays out the NEURO plan they follow themselves. Cut simple carbs by 10 percent. Sprint for 10 to 30 seconds at a time. Unwind daily. Sleep seven to eight hours, and get tested for sleep apnea if you still wake up tired. Learn something new.
Max takes a face name memory test live, the same one you can try free at AlzU.org from Weill Cornell. Gupta visits a dementia village in the Netherlands, and Fay retakes the AARP Staying Sharp quiz.
The episode closes with Kaden Culp, a 10 year old in Texas who was badly burned, and his mother Tristan, who talks with Melissa Moore about his recovery.
