Russia pounds Ukraine, killing at least 24 people

Russian missiles and drones pounded Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions, killing at least 24 civilians, including four children, and wounding around 60. Ukraine had anticipated the attack, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warning of a “massive” strike. Despite knowing about the looming attack, Ukraine couldn’t completely fend it off. The deaths and damage highlight Ukraine's struggle to counter Russia’s ballistic missiles and new jet-powered drones. Ukraine is racing to develop interceptors and is seeking Patriot missiles worldwide. Meanwhile, Ukraine has hit back by targeting Russian oil facilities. U.S.-led peace efforts appear unlikely to bring short-term relief.
