Why C-F Is Stronger Than C-Cl: Bond Energy Explained | AS & A-Level Chemistry #shorts
MEGA Lecture ·
Description
Bond energy depends on how strongly two atoms are held together, and that is closely linked to bond length. A fluorine atom is smaller than a chlorine atom, so a C-F bond is shorter than a C-Cl bond, giving more effective orbital overlap and less shielding of the shared electrons. That is why smaller atoms tend to form stronger bonds, and a C-F bond has a higher bond energy than a C-Cl bond.
