What makes a good judge - years of courtroom experience, or rigorous training before taking the Bench? The Supreme Court has significantly changed the rules for entry-level judicial recruitment. After mandating three years of practice at the Bar in 2025, the Court has now moved to a new model combining one year of practice, one year of Judicial Academy training, and one year of supervised Law Clerkship. Vinod Chandran, in dissent, warned against creating a “cadre of careerists rather than jurists”. Ruchi Bhattar discusses the Supreme Court's new judicial recruitment framework with Pinky Anand, senior advocate and former Additional Solicitor General; Bharat Chugh, advocate and former Civil Judge and Siddharth Raman, Co-founder, TheProfesseer.
