How to Draw Cats and Lions: Gesture Drawing From Any Angle

Details

Description

This is the third video in the Drawing Animals series, and this one works through lions and cats. The question underneath it is why you should have to relearn a whole system just to draw a different animal. The same 16 lines that build a figure get extended, shortened, and redirected until they build a cat, then carried through five angles. What this video covers: - The 16 line framework from the figure, and how each line moves rather than gets replaced - Why the small circle on the figure becomes the largest circle on the horse - One long S curve from the point of the pelvis down into hamstring, Achilles, and foot - Starting the leg high in the body so it does not drop out like a balloon animal - The boomerang for scapula and humerus, and why it sits below the spine on a horse and pops above it on a cat - Where the cat departs from the horse: longer torso, extra vertebrae, lower hamstring, and the clavicle - Separating cats from dogs at the head, a sleek curve against a stair stepped muzzle - Foreshortening in the trunk, shortening each line and emphasizing the wrapping lines - Reading weight through the tilt of the pelvis and the tilt of the shoulders - A ground plane grid to keep the legs aligned and spaced - Keeping gesture lines just inside the contour to leave room for error - How little to invest in heads and feet at the gesture stage - Five angles: profile, foreshortened front, three quarter, back three quarter, and straight on CHAPTERS 00:00 The Drawing Animals series: cats and lions 00:25 The 16 lines, recapped from the figure 01:08 Why relearn a whole system for a different animal 02:40 Back legs: one long S curve into hamstring and Achilles 03:39 The boomerang for the front limb 04:45 First drawing: the cat in profile 05:57 Where the cat departs from the horse 07:04 Feet, and how little to invest in them 08:07 Weight, and the boomerang above the spine 09:27 Different angles: foreshortening from the front 12:14 Reading weight in the tilt of the pelvis and shoulders 13:28 A ground plane grid for the legs 15:28 The back three quarter view 18:19 Adding the challenge of fur and mane 21:46 The pounce: shifting the center of gravity back 23:30 Straight on, the angle people ask about 25:55 Building from horse to human to cat COURSES & FREE RESOURCES → figuredrawing.info AVAILABLE COURSES: The Gesture Course → https://www.proko.com/course/the-gesture-course Drapery Fundamentals → https://www.proko.com/course/drapery-fundamentals Introduction to Figure Construction → https://www.proko.com/s/FLC2?af=543975 Head Drawing and Construction → https://www.proko.com/s/NQRY?af=543975 BOOKS: Figure Drawing: Design and Invention → https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B00420I182 Gesture Drawing: Dynamic Movement and Form → https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CZ3RZ72F FOLLOW: Instagram → @stevenmichaelhampton #GestureDrawing #DrawingLions #AnimalDrawing
