In today's travel video, we explore the Patagonian beach town of Puerto Piramides, which is the only town located within the Valdes Peninsula. The town has a population of just over 700, though for a few months of the year, the whale population far exceeds the number of inhabitants on land! We had one full day to explore Puerto Piramides, so we spent it: watching the sunrise up on the cliffs, hiking out to the lobería where we saw sea lions, eating a delicious seafood pasta at La Covacha, strolling down the colourful Avenue of the Whales, and enjoying our stay at the Oceano Patagonia eco-hotel. We hope you enjoy this little taste of a beach town in Patagonia and we'll see you tomorrow with more adventures around the peninsula!
Puerto Pirámides Adventure on Valdes Peninsula: Sunrise Hikes, Wildlife Encounters & Beach Town Vibes 🦭🌅🍔
🌄 Early Morning Magic: Sunrise Over the Peninsula
Our day in Puerto Pirámides, the only town within the Peninsula Valdés Nature Reserve, began with a spectacular sunrise. Staying at Oceano Patagonia, an eco-hotel right on the beach, we took the advice of the staff and hiked nearby cliffs at dawn. The reward? Incredible views of the glowing coastline and a glimpse of a hidden “secret beach” that most visitors never see. Even though waking up early was tough, the changing morning light made the whole effort worthwhile.
🍞 Breakfast with a View & Feline Company
Back at the hotel, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast featuring artisanal bread, jams, and dulce de leche, all while being joined by the hotel’s resident cat. As cat lovers, we even carried our own cat food—making new furry friends a recurring theme of our travels.
🏖️ Exploring Puerto Pirámides: A Day in Town
Intentional Slow Travel: After days of peninsula excursions, today was all about local experiences. We planned to stick around town, hike, and soak up the small-town vibes.
Ambitious Morning Hike: We set out on foot to La Lobería, a nearby coastal area where sea lions and elephant seals teach their pups to swim. The path was long, hot, and sun-drenched—so be sure to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat if you attempt it!
Unexpected Hitchhiking: Luckily, a kind Dutch traveler gave us a lift partway, allowing us to admire the animals in comfort before heading back.
Trail Mishap: Our walk back was much longer than expected after missing a trail turnoff, forcing us to trudge along the highway under the scorching sun. Hot and tired, we rewarded ourselves with an epic meal at “La Cucaracha”—a local favorite.
🍔 Foodie Highlights: Lamb Burgers & Seafood Pasta
Patagonia Burger: Featuring a thick lamb patty, baked cheese, greens, and sun-dried tomatoes—a hearty meal worth the effort!
Seafood Pasta: Giant ravioli stuffed with prawns, topped with mussel cream sauce and calamari—a showstopper dish that stole the show for the day.
Portions: Both dishes were generously sized, perfect for sharing (if you’re willing!).
🌈 Colorful Town Stroll & Siesta Culture
Avenida de las Ballenas: Puerto Pirámides’ main street bursts with colorful murals, quirky cafés, and vibrant restaurants.
Siesta Time: The town empties out during the hottest part of the afternoon, with locals and tourists alike seeking shade at the beach or a cool nap indoors.
Finding Refreshment: After an unsuccessful search for an open café during siesta, we ended up back at the hotel for refreshing smoothies.
🏡 Hotel Tour: Eco-Friendly Comfort at Oceano Patagonia
Beachfront Location: Our room opened directly onto the sand, with ocean views and direct access to the beach.
Self-Catered Breakfast: The fridge was stocked with supplies for flexible, in-room breakfasts—fresh bread, jams, fruit, eggs, and more.
Design: Recycled wood, concrete floors, massive windows, and a blend of rustic and modern touches made it a cozy, sustainable retreat.
Amenities: Spacious living and sleeping areas, a modern bathroom with a rainforest showerhead, and plenty of storage—even if we never unpacked fully.
🛶 Missed Opportunities & Travel Lessons
Kayak Plans Dashed: Despite plans to rent kayaks for a sunset paddle, most shops had closed by the time we made it down to the beach.
Travel Realities: Not every day goes according to plan, but even the unexpected moments add color to the adventure.
Takeaway: Stay flexible, savor the surprises, and always bring extra water!
💬 Closing Thoughts
Though technical difficulties meant half our footage was missing audio (microphone mishap!), we did our best to fill in the story. Puerto Pirámides offered dazzling nature, memorable meals, and a laid-back vibe—a perfect rest day between more ambitious peninsula explorations.
