The video explains cervical insufficiency, a condition in which the cervix opens painlessly and prematurely during pregnancy, increasing the risk of pregnancy loss or preterm birth. Women with a history of second-trimester pregnancy losses or a short or weak cervix may be at higher risk. One treatment option discussed is the Shirodkar cerclage, where a strong, non-absorbable suture is placed high around the cervix to provide structural support. The procedure may be particularly considered in selected cases involving a very short or scarred cervix or previous cerclage failure. It is technically more challenging than some other cerclage techniques and therefore requires specialized expertise. The procedure is commonly performed around 12–14 weeks of pregnancy and, in selected situations, may be performed later. The key message is that early diagnosis, appropriate assessment, and timely intervention can help reduce the risk of pregnancy loss or preterm birth. Women at risk of cervical insufficiency should consult a high-risk pregnancy specialist for individualized evaluation and treatment.
