What does life inside Tihar Jail look like when every day follows the same routine? In this video, we bring you Umar Khalid’s first-person account of a day behind bars, as he completes six years in prison. From the early morning “ginti” (prisoner count) to the final lock-up at night, Umar Khalid describes the sounds, routines, friendships, restrictions and small moments that define life inside one of India’s most well-known prisons. “Khalid utho, haath hilaao. Khalid, abbay zinda hai?” — these are the words that begin his day inside the prison ward. Umar Khalid has remained in custody for six years while the legal proceedings continue. His supporters have called his incarceration an example of the challenges faced by dissenters and political prisoners in India, while authorities have maintained their allegations against him. In his prison diary, Umar Khalid writes about waking up to the sound of wardens counting prisoners, sharing space with more than 100 inmates, waiting in lines for basic facilities, receiving censored newspapers, making limited phone calls with family, and helping fellow prisoners with legal applications. Watch this detailed account of one day in Umar Khalid’s life inside Tihar Jail — a prison diary about time, isolation, survival and the human stories hidden behind prison walls. #UmarKhalid #TiharJail #DelhiRiotsCase #PrisonDiary #UAPA #IndianJudiciary #CivilLiberties #DelhiNews #IndiaNews #TheQuint From exposing misinformation to delivering impactful human rights reporting, our newsroom has relentlessly pursued stories that drive change.
