Shashi Tharoor Interview: Did The Youth Break BJP's Aura? | The Quint

Details

Description

Three things have happened around the CJP: Dharmendra Pradhan resigned; sustained pressure around the NALSAR row forced the Bar Council of India to backtrack; and ahead of the planned 5 September protest, the Centre moved the Supreme Court over the cases against protesting students, following which the CJP called off the march. Taken together, they raise a larger question: is the BJP’s aura of invincibility beginning to fade? Congress leader Shashi Tharoor believes there are signs of a “different mood in the country”. He argues that the BJP’s formidable political base, organisational strength and single-minded focus on elections may be difficult to overcome – but not impossible. As he points to recent electoral results, the CJP protests and Rahul Gandhi’s mobilisation around alleged police brutality, his argument is that sustained public pressure can still break through an apparently unbeatable political machine. Tharoor also challenges another pillar of the government’s political pitch – its economic record. Speaking about his conversations with businesspeople, he says corruption has “never been worse” for businesses across the spectrum, while only a handful are prospering. The question is whether these scattered signs are beginning to add up to something bigger. Watch the full interview on The Quint.
